The Travelling Life of Silvan Colani
January 2001 - Boracay, Philippines I spent my Chinese New Year holiday on the most beautiful beach in the world - Boracay! I'm not exaggerating, of all the places I have been, this one is unrivaled in its combination of white sand, clear turquoise waters, good diving, spectacular sunsets and - last, but not least - an ample supply of cheap, cool San Miguel.
There is a slight hassle to get there, since you have to change planes in Manila. However, considering the fact that I traveled through Manila on the very day that former President Estrada was disposed of and I STILL managed to take an earlier flight to Boracay, I can really not complain.
I have been in Boracay many times now and it's still spectacular. Despite some developments (yes, they also have a golf course now) it is still very laid back and you bet they will have one brownout every night. The daily routine is as simple as this:
- Get up, walk out of your hut and have a swim
- Eat a mango for breakfast
- Go for a leisurely dive
- Lay in the sun
- Walk down the beach to meet friends for a sunset at 5 p.m.
- Have a San Miguel and watch the sun dip behind the horizon at 5.45 p.m.
- Eat Chicken Adobo for dinner
- Do some dancing at Beachcomber, Cocomanga's, Summer Place or Local Bar
- Go to bed, start from top
And what I like best is that for an entire week I don't wear any shoes at all. I think you will be hard pressed to find another place like that anywhere in the world.
Another reason I like to visit Boracay of course, is that it is home to the famous artist Paga d'ache, to whom I'm somehow related. He lives in a beautiful cottage at the end of Diniwid beach and spends his entire day windsurfing and painting. The Thursday Billiard Competition at his place, which brings together young billiard cracks from around the island is a fantastic event. Make sure you give him a shout if you are in Boracay...
