The Travelling Life of Silvan Colani
March 2005 - Boracay, Philippines
We made it back to Boracay in time for the opening of the first room at the brand new Villa Artista - the boutique hotel designed by the local artist paga d'ache - and to enjoy a few peaceful moments on the beach!
Peaceful my a**: this was Easter, or Holy Week, whereby this beautiful island gets flooded with rich Filipino kids from Manila, all looking to have a great party. I have nothing against a good party, but when the White Beach gets as crowded as a Saturday afternoon in Causeway Bay, it's a bit much!
Anyway, we still had a great time - and many good sunsets - as the following pictures confirm, but I seriously suggest that you consider visiting Boracay at a different time.
Or you climb Mt Luho, Boracay's highest mountain, where not many tourists venture to. It's a special experience indeed, whereby you get to see the "other side" of paradise - hiking past the "smoky mountains" (heaps of smoldering garbage) and the mess of the unfinished golf resort. But you'll be rewarded with peace and quiet and a spectacular view across the entire island - even in driving rain and wind!!!
And what about Villa Arista? Well, it's taking great shape. Everything worked well in the first room: aircon, running water (only cold for the time being, but from a fancy "rain shower"), TV (who the hell needs TV on Boracay) and a mini fridge stocked with San Miguel. What else do you need in life...?
I hope you enjoy these pictures and stay tuned for more updates on Villa Artista...
P.S. Through an entry on my Guestbook, I've been recently reminded of a report on Boracay I wrote in 2002, entitled Top 10 Reasons Why Boracay Is The Best. It's still valid (mostly), so check it out. ![]()
