The Travelling Life of Silvan Colani

February 2007 - Boracay, Philippines

I’ve been to Boracay so many times now that I’ve run out of things to write about it. So pardon me for being lazy, but I’ll just stick in a few pictures with a few brief comments. You should know by now that Boracay is the best beach in the world. Trust me. Just go and see for yourself!

Accommodation

Stay at ARTISTA Boracay! Why? Because I’m a shareholder and my dad, Jimmy, runs the place. But seriously, check out the views from the rooms and from the breakfast bar on the roof. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better place.

If you’re on a tight budget and prefer to live “native” style, stay at the nearby Spider House instead. Basic facilities and shared toilets/bathrooms, but you’ll have the best view on the island – with a prime sunset vantage spot from your bed!

What to do?

Sit at the beach and do nothing! It’s easier than you think! Just enjoy the view.

Sunset

What can I say? I’ve taken a million pictures already and each time it’s another spectacle! Boracay is simply the best place in the world to enjoy the sunset (with the cheapest – and best – beer on the planet). But it’s not just the view and the beer. It’s the whole mixture of people (local and foreign kids running around playing), music (Filipinos are famous for good sounds), smell (something’s burning!) and atmosphere. Seeing is believing.

Transportation

The good news is that both Seair and Asian Spirit have introduced new jet planes that shorten the flight from Manila to Caticlan to as little as 35 minutes. The bad news is that the local government has decided not to allow anymore bancas (the traditional Filipono boats) to land on White Beach (or Diniwid for that matter). This means that instead of the traditional “wading through the water” arrival (always amusing watching fully clothed tourists with heavy Samsonites struggle onshore) you are now required to land at a new pier and get to your hotel by stinky tricycle or bus.

The positive aspect of this new rule is that the White Beach is much less crowded with boats, but some of the magic of Boracay has been lost in turn. This being the Philippines, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if things will change again in the future. Stay tuned.
