The Travelling Life of Silvan Colani

November 2000 - Macau Grand Prix

November sees the annual Macau Grand Prix held in the former Portuguese colony. This is a weekend full of action, gasoline and... girls. While there were some female drivers (surprisingly), most girls we bumped into were hanging around off the track. But before we go into this, let's talk about the action:

The big event in Macau is the Formula 3 race, which is held over two legs on Sunday. But before that, there is plenty of other motorsports to keep your adrenaline pumping. First thing on Saturday morning was the Motorcycle Grand Prix. This is really exciting stuff as some skinny guys on 1,000cc engines virtually fly by.

Other races on Saturday included the Formula 2000 championship which saw French guy Philippe Descombes winning the title. This is none other than my driving instructor from my Formula Campus racing course in Zhuhai. (He appears to have learned a thing or two from me!!!) There was even a Swiss driver in this race, Daniel Marti, who unfortunately crashed out (just as last year, I might add). Better luck next year, Dani!

The first excitement on Sunday was the Deutsche Bank Supercar Race, which had to be re-started twice due to some pile ups down the road. In the end, Philip Ma in a Porsche 911 won the race.

The most exciting race by far, however, was the Guia Race that saw an incredible battle for second position between Henry Lee Jr. in a Peugeot and a guy whose name I forgot in a BMW. The Peugeot prevailed until the end but only by a very narrow margin. The race had earlier to be re-started due to a significant pile up down in the Lisboa bend. The crowd favorite was a Japanese driver in a red Toyota who, after having fallen to the back of the field after a mechanical problem, managed to finish the race in fourth position. Excellent driving indeed.

In comparison, the Formula 3 finale was rather uneventful, particularly as they crossed the finishing line behind the Safety Car. Macau-born Andre Couto won the race to the delight of the local crowd.

Now, what about the girls? Well I think I save the comment and let the pictures speak for themselves...
